Gym Class or More Academics?

Gym Class or More Academics?

There is a great divide among educators: Is gym class important or is it more important to have an extra language course, or a computer class, or a math class? Let’s face it, there is a limited amount of time. We live in a competitive world where people are demanding more and more education, and quicker. But, according to a report in the British Medical Journal, there may be a middle ground. In the study, students were randomized to receive their normal three phys ed classes a week or to receive restructured lessons five times a week. They found exercise clearly takes the day.

More Teens Considering Breast Implants

More Teens Considering Breast Implants

A growing number of teens are considering implants for their breasts, and of course, the silicone gel implants have found their way back. Whether it’s saline or silicone, it’s something a teen should think very carefully about. There are side effects and there are problems that can occur. This is not a procedure that can be done or taken lightly. Since 1992, for instance, the silicone implants were available only as part of research studies. Now they’re readily available. The bottom line is you have to be really careful, and do you really need it?

Teenagers and Dangers of Huffing

Teenagers and Dangers of Huffing

It is called huffing and it has rapidly become one of the most popular methods for teens to get high. Despite the numerous risks, including brain damage, it is estimated that 1.1 million adolescents inhale lethal substances like freon and butane each year. In addition to brain damage, huffing can lead to kidney, lung and bone problems as well as an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. According to the National Inhalant Prevention Coalition, there are certain telltale signs, including red or runny eyes, spots or sores around the mouth, chemical body odor, nausea, anxiety and stains on the body or clothing. The latest reports find that teen girls are more likely to abuse inhalants. Obviously, these are important issues. You need to learn as much as you possibly can.

The Urgency Of Talking With Your Teen About Sex

The Urgency Of Talking With Your Teen About Sex

It’s a key issue…sex and teens. It’s a topic that urgently needs to be discussed. Obviously, parents don’t want to have to deal with this issue, but the bottom line is you must discuss it with your teen. You have to evaluate what’s going on and let them know about potential risks and problems. It’s very important that teenagers be treated as adults. You have a golden opportunity to explain to your teen the potential problems that can occur, and that early sex can lead to serious lifelong issues; not only sexually transmitted diseases, but the potential of responsibilities, like unwanted pregnancy, that will be difficult to deal with.

SSRI Antidepressant Use in Teens

SSRI Antidepressant Use in Teens

There continues to be a serious debate in psychiatry. Does the use of antidepressant medications help teens, and does it help them with the condition, or do they increase a teen risk of committing suicide? Back in 2004, the Food and Drug Administration included what is known as a black box warning on a group of antidepressants called the SSRIs to alert healthcare providers to an increased risk of suicides in children and teens. New research revealed that information from 24 overall trials in over 4,500 pediatric patients taking one of nine antidepressant medications found that only one trial, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, found a significant increase in suicides and that was more than fourfold. However, when all 24 studies were combined, there was no increase. The conclusion? This is not a declaration of safety, but a further warning that these medications need to be used under careful supervision, if at all.

Adolescents and the Risk of STDs

Adolescents and the Risk of STDs

Sexually transmitted diseases do occur in adolescents and they can be problematic. You need to talk to your teens about sex, premarital sex, and what the issues are. Also, talk to them about the risks; the risks of sexually transmitted diseases and the fact that infections can cause a great deal of trouble, short-term and long-term. One of the things many teens don’t know is it can actually affect fertility. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can actually cause scarring in the tubes and can cause difficulty for women who want to have babies in the future.

Teenagers Should Limit Caffeine Intake

Teenagers Should Limit Caffeine Intake

Caffeine is a drug that’s being used more and more in teenagers. It’s a medication, in a sense, because, yes, it’s legal, yes, it’s accepted, but it does act as a stimulant. Many teenagers use it now with the added pressures of staying up late and having pressures for work. They tend to push themselves. It’s very important that teenagers do all they can to try to control the amount of coffee they have. Let them have a cup of coffee if they want to, but that’s about it. You should back off after that.
