Alcohol Can Lead to Stomach Irritation

Alcohol Can Lead to Stomach Irritation

Alcohol can lead to stomach irritation. This isn’t necessarily an allergic reaction, but it’s a direct reaction to a toxin, of sorts. Alcohol, when it gets into the stomach, actually causes an increase in secretion of stomach acid…that increased secretion of stomach acid can cause tenderness and belly pain. The belly pain can be treated essentially by trying to neutralize the acid; you would use Tums, Rolaids or products like that. But over time, it can have a disastrous effect, if you continue drinking.

Seafood Allergies

Seafood Allergies

Seafood allergies are very annoying. The reason they’re very annoying is because they can actually creep up on a person and cause problems. The thing about a seafood allergy that’s very important is that it doesn’t start necessarily with that quick of a reaction. You might have a little discomfort, you might have a little stomach issue or something like that, and over time, seafood allergy starts to become more serious. When it’s serious, it can be very difficult to deal.

Using Aspirin Safely

Using Aspirin Safely

It’s been said that if aspirin came out now, the FDA would not approve it, and they’re probably right. There are so many side effects and problems associated with aspirin. It’s difficult to prescribe, and yet, it’s over-the-counter. And here’s the point, aspirin has many protective things that it does, but it also can lead to problems, such as gastrointestinal bleeding. In young people, it can cause Reye’s Syndrome. In other people, we have issues with rebound headaches, because people take too much of it. Remember, aspirin is good, but it needs to be used judiciously.

What is Heartburn?

What is Heartburn?

Heartburn is a health problem that is annoying. Basically, here’s what happens in heartburn. The esophagus is a tube that goes from the mouth down into the stomach. When acid escapes from the stomach, it goes into the esophagus. The esophagus lining is not meant for acid. It can’t buffer it the way the stomach can. As a result, a person feels the pain, and with that pain of the heartburn comes an irritation. That gastric irritation can be extremely painful at night.

Update on Ovarian Cancer

Update on Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is not that common of a form of cancer but when it hits, it is extremely aggressive. There are about 16,000 to 17,000 new cases in the United States each year. The problem is that it can also run in families, but for some, it occurs sporadically. We don’t really have great warning signs for ovarian cancer. There are certain things that can tip it off like feelings of the stomach being bloated and distention. But those types of things can occur for other reasons as well. That’s why we have to be so careful.

Reducing Heartburn Pain

Reducing Heartburn Pain

Heartburn is very frustrating because one of the problems is it is hard to distinguish from actual heart pain. The thing about heartburn that you have to realize is there are certain things that make heartburn worse; acid, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco. All of those things will build up stomach acid, and as they do, it can make that heartburn worse. One of the things I believe that’s very important in dealing with heartburn is you also elevate the head of the bed. If you go to bed, make sure you actually have your head a little higher. Gravity will help you deal with it. That certainly will help with the symptoms.
