Early Diagnosis of Migraines Is Important

As many as one out of five people suffer from migraine headaches. These headaches are usually quite severe and they are preceded by an aura, or a strange sensation, like a flashing of light or a strange smell. They’re often diagnosed as sinus headaches, tension headaches, or a variety of other types of head pain, but a new study out of Columbia and highlighted by the Journal of the American Medical Association is stressing the importance of early diagnosis. That’s because the cycle of a migraine can often be cut short through the use of drugs called Triptans. These medications are available in a wide variety of forms, including pills, inhalers, and even injections. Migraines can be unusual. They don’t always cause headaches, and they can actually cause a wide variety of symptoms from visual disturbances to stomach problems. Migraines need to be taken seriously. Clearly they are a problem that have to be dealt with.

Appropriate Medications for Children

You may have heard the statement, children are just little adults. Well that is true, but it’s also not true when it comes to medicine. You just can’t give the same drugs to children that you give to adults, and you can’t give half the dose, or anything like that. Many medications cannot be processed by children. Many medications given to children can cause problems in bone development, teeth development. All of these things have to be checked into. So if you have a medication at home that you think worked for you, just don’t give it to your child. Check with your doctor, and find out if they need their own prescription, or their own dose.

A Look at Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are very interesting. They’re difficult to treat because in many cases it’s tough to tell if someone has a migraine. The thing about migraine headache that’s important to realize is there’s often some sort of aura, some sort of sense that something’s not right. Perhaps there’s a strange smell. The smell of coffee when there is none, or a zigzagging of lights, that sort of thing. Migraine headaches can be treated with medication, especially if they’re treated what we call prophylactically, before the headache occurs because you sense it’s coming on. It’s a very good way to approach it.

Grapefruit Juice and Medication Interactions

Grapefruit Juice and Medication Interactions

Doctors have warned patients for quite some time that grapefruit juice can interact with certain medications and cause harmful side-effects. This is particularly common with some blood pressure-lowering drugs and some cholesterol-lowering medications. Researchers believe they know the reason. So-called furanocoumarins seem to be the problem. Grapefruit juice armed with the furanocoumarins can cause these drugs to enter the bloodstream more efficiently, thereby increasing the dose and effect and the potential for undesirable, and even dangerous, side-effects. Researchers from the University of North Carolina found that once you took the furanocoumarins out, the juice behaved like orange juice. Those marketing grapefruit juice envision the production of a furanocoumarin-free juice, much like lactose-free milk. It’s an interesting idea.

The Correct Drug Dosages for Children

The Correct Drug Dosages for Children

Drug dosing is very important in children because children don’t take the same amount of medicine as adults. When the doctor calculates what the child’s going to have, it’s very important that that is evaluated and looked at from the standpoint of not overdosing a child. Children respond very well to medications if given in the proper dosages. That’s why when you see the pediatrician or the family physician and they write the dosage, make sure you look at it and you take it to the pharmacy, and they closely look at it, so there is not a discrepancy.

Be Aware of Medication Withdrawal Symptoms

Be Aware of Medication Withdrawal Symptoms

Medication withdrawal can be a big problem and we often don’t think about it when we’re dealing with medications. If you’re someone who is taking a prescription drug, and you’re thinking about switching off or talking with your doctor, make sure it’s something that you can take and stop. For instance, people who have high blood pressure are often on antihypertensive medications, blood-pressure drugs. They can take them and they stop taking them, and they don’t realize that the blood pressure can rise dramatically as the blood pressure pill is taken away.

Using Pain Killers Appropriately

Using Pain Killers Appropriately

Pain killers are very effective to deal with pain…that’s why they’re called painkillers. But one of the problems with pain killers is people can have a dependence on them, and with that dependence, they can run into issues. One thing that’s essential is that if a doctor gives a patient a pain killer, the patient should know it is a short-term solution, not the end-all. If it’s an end-all solution, people ultimately become so addicted to them they have no other answer but to use them. That is not where doctors want to be in the management of pain. What doctors want to do is use them as an ally, not a crutch.
