Medicine Cabinet Concerns

medicine cabinet

Have you taken a look in your family’s medicine cabinet lately? What you might find could shock you. Now, here’s the problem. The medicine cabinet often becomes a storage area for old medications that you want to keep around just in case you need them. The argument is usually something like, ‘I spent a lot of money on this medicine. I’m going to get my money’s worth!’ The problem is, the medication that’s good for one person with one health problem isn’t always good for the other and then there is the difficulty with expired drugs. They can make you sick, or they can even poison you. Remember, young children are curious and they might want to see what’s in those bottles. If you have teens, consider this. While illicit drug and alcohol use among teens is down, the use of prescription painkillers among people ages eight to 25 is up. In fact, prescription painkillers are now attracting the most users of any drugs.

Over-Consumption of Junk Food Can Trigger Addiction-Like Responses in the Brain

Doctors and researchers have suspected this for quite some time, but a study in rats reported in the journal Neuroscience has found that over-consumption of high-calorie food can trigger addiction-like responses in the brain, and that junk food can turn rats into compulsive eaters in a laboratory setting.  When the researchers regularly offered rats a choice of high-calorie foods such as bacon, sausage, cake, and chocolate in addition to their regular food choices, the animals over-consumed calories and gained weight rapidly.  The study gets even more interesting, the team trained their rats to expect painful foot shocks when seeing a light signal.  Although normal rats stop eating even the most delicious junk food when the light comes on, the obese rats used to the high-calorie diet just keep feeding.  The desire for junk food overcame the fear of pain.

Treating Throat Infections

When medical experts talked about sore throats and pharyngitis, it used to be very simple.  They would begin treatment with an antibiotic because doctors felt that was the most effective way to treat the throat infection.  But what researchers are learning, in many cases, is it’s not necessary to prescribe an antibiotic.  In fact, in many cases, a throat infection might be due to a viral origin and an antibiotic really isn’t that helpful at all. It’s one of those things doctors started to learn over time and are realizing that they have to take their time figuring out what treatments there are before they aggressively go at it.

The Male Y Chromosome May Be Disappearing

The Male Y Chromosome May Be Disappearing

There’s new information, at least theoretically, that the male Y chromosome could be disappearing. This work was done at Penn State. It’s in the journal PLoS Genetics. Researchers say there is a dramatic loss of genes from the human Y chromosome and it could eventually lead to its complete disappearance over the next million years or so. While some genes seem to be essential, like those for sperm development, most have been lost and the researchers say that they found evidence that many are on a track to disappear as well. If this happens, researchers say a new pair of chromosomes will likely start down the path of becoming X and Y sex chromosomes. It’s pretty fascinating how you can actually see mutations occur, but this is essentially how the world has developed; changes and development. With those differences came different people.

Learn to Accept Defeat to Enjoy Winning

Learn to Accept Defeat to Enjoy Winning

Accepting defeat can be very difficult, but it’s very important to learn how to accept defeat. One of the best ways you learn how to accept defeat is by losing, and that’s okay. Part of the problem we have in our society now is many children are not allowed to lose. They’re always put on winning teams. They’re always put in situations where they will succeed. That isn’t necessarily the best thing. Losing makes the fact that you win every now and then seem far more enjoyable. It’s through that path that you get a great deal success.

Working Mothers Deal with Many Pressures

Working moms have to deal with a lot of issues and one of them is trying to stay in condition while they’re trying to work and deal with the other pressures. There is a psychological, an emotional, and a physical component with working and all of those things need to be considered. One of the biggest strides you can take as a woman who is working is to understand that you don’t have to be perfect. You try to do the best you can, but realize that you are undertaking quite a few stresses all at once and you can only do the best you can to deal with it and not be overwhelmed.

Eating a Healthy Diet During Pregnancy

Eating a Healthy Diet During Pregnancy

The best diet during pregnancy is one that is actually high in fruits and vegetables. What doctors often suggest you do is you talk to your obstetrician/gynecologist to discuss the best foods during pregnancy, but one of the things that physicians look at, essentially, is trying to get people to have a balanced diet. You don’t want to eat too much or too little, and you want to make sure that you have the proper components of fruits and vegetables. You want to avoid things that are high in fat, in excess. Again, it’s moderation that is the key.
